NARRATIVES ~
FIGMENTS & FRAGMENTS
Opening Night Reception: Saturday Jan 15th 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: Jan 15th - 29th, 2022
Guest Curator | Emma Powell
The photograph’s power as a narrative tool is derived from the impression that what is captured within the frame is an accurate representation of what actually occurred at a specific moment in time. As complete or comprehensive as any narrative may appear to be, it will always be subject to a process of including some elements and excluding others. These inclusions and exclusion are a crucial part of what photographic storytelling is all about - What is being presented within the frame to the viewer – and what is being left out or left to the viewer’s imagination.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the development of visual narratives through the still image. Stories may take any shape or form; they may be literal or fantasy, documentary or fiction; complex or minimal.

BLACK & WHITE
Opening Night Reception: June 20, 6 – 8 PM
Exhibition Dates: June 20 – July 11, 2026
More than half a century after the widespread adoption of color photography, black and white continues to assert a distinct and vital visual language—one grounded in reduction, contrast, and form. Without color, the image is stripped to its essential elements. Light defines structure. Tone carries weight. Surface, texture, and gesture become primary. What remains is not absence, but focus—an image constructed through precision, clarity, and visual intent.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic work that engages black & white and monochromatic practice as a deliberate act—where meaning is built through the interplay of light and shadow, form and contrast. Juror: Sandrine Hermand-Grisele

THE LIFE OF COLOR
Color is not passive. It directs attention, shapes atmosphere, and influences how an image is experienced before form is fully resolved. Beyond description, color operates as signal—amplifying, unifying, or destabilizing what is seen. It can heighten emotion or introduce tension, flatten space or deepen it. Its presence is immediate, but its effects are complex.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic work that engages color as a central force in image-making—where hue, value, and saturation are used deliberately to construct meaning, evoke response, and define the visual experience. Curated by Praxis Directors

THE PORTRAIT
Opening Night Reception: May 23, 6–8 PM, 2026
Exhibition Dates: May 23 - June 13, 2026
A portrait begins with attention—an act of looking, and of being looked at. Each image holds a tension between appearance and interior life. A face, posture, gesture, or setting may suggest clarity, but also carries ambiguity. Some portraits are direct and documentary; others are constructed, performative, or conceptual. They may reveal intimacy or explore distance, anonymity, and self-invention.
To make a portrait is to engage another presence—or to turn the camera toward oneself—and consider how identity is shaped, expressed, withheld, or transformed within the frame.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic portraits that examine the depth and complexity of the human subject. The exhibition features work reflecting lived experience, psychological presence, cultural context, and formal exploration through the lens. Juried by Elizabeth Flinsch.

BALANCE / REPETITION / DISRUPTION
Opening Night Reception: April 18, 6–8 PM, 2026
Exhibition Dates: April 18 - May 9, 2026
COMPOSED
Balance, repetition, and disruption shape how images take form through compositional decisions and visual relationships. These elements function not as steps, but as interacting conditions. An image may begin in equilibrium or fracture it immediately; repetition may stabilize form or reveal instability; disruption may interrupt order or expose patterns already present.
The photographs in this exhibition engage these ideas in different ways. Some emphasize clarity and restraint, while others explore accumulation, variation, or rupture. Subject matter varies widely, but each work considers how form, space, rhythm, and visual weight operate within the frame. Together, the works approach composition as an exploratory process, testing how images hold together, repeat themselves, or come undone

MAKING STRANGE
How do we see what happens and recurs every day—the banal, the common, the ordinary? Can we recover astonishment from the familiar by rendering it newly visible?
Making Strange presents photographs that transform the everyday through framing, timing, light, distance, or construction. Artists reveal unexpected aspects of the world, presenting subjects as unfamiliar or newly charged with meaning. Praxis Gallery seeks work that renders the ordinary unfamiliar—where the iconic, the ironic, and the overlooked are constructed through deliberate acts of seeing.

Making Strange

The technique of art is to make the familiar unfamiliar and extend the length of perception.
— Viktor Shklovsky
Making Strange invites photographs that transform the ordinary into something newly visible. Through framing, timing, light, distance, or construction, artists reveal unexpected aspects of the world around us—rendering everyday subjects as unfamiliar or charged with new or unexpected meaning.
Praxis Gallery seeks photographic works that search for the iconic and ironic in the everyday world around us; that portray the people, places, and things which have become ordinary to us in new, imaginative and expressive ways. One image may be recognized as the Viktor Shklovsky Award, highlighting a work that most strongly engages the idea of making the familiar unfamiliar.

BALANCE / REPETITION / DISRUPTION
Opening Night Reception:April 18, 6–8 PM, 2026
Exhibition Dates: April 18 - May 9, 2026
Balance, repetition, and disruption shape how images take form through compositional decision-making and visual relationships. These elements operate not as steps, but as interacting conditions. An image may begin in equilibrium or fracture it immediately; repetition may stabilize form or reveal instability; disruption may interrupt order or expose patterns already at work.
The photographs in this exhibition engage these ideas independently and in combination. Some works emphasize clarity and restraint, while others explore accumulation, variation, or rupture. The subject matter varies widely; what connects the works is how form, space, rhythm, and visual weight function within the frame.
This exhibition approaches composition as an active, exploratory process. The artists presented here test how images hold together, repeat themselves, or come undone.

THE PORTRAIT
Opening Night Reception: June 21, 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: June 21–July 12, 2025
"Making portraits is more than a physical form, it’s a silent communication in understanding and respect between the photographer and the subject. There’s an internal emotion and fire of the soul that you try to capture." – Sandra
In her book, Portraits and Persons, writer Cynthia Freeland describes three essential elements that constitute a portrait: “(1) a recognizable physical body (2) an inner life, i.e., some sort of psychological or mental states and (3) self-presentation, or the "posing.”
Praxis Gallery presents photographs that celebrate the aesthetic and conceptual considerations involved in the creation of the portrait: revealing personal narratives or new anthologies through the artistic representation of the subject. Juried by Sandrine Hermand Grisel

Submission Deadline: July 12, 11:59PM CT
Exhibition dates: Aug 22 - Sept 12, 2026
Notification: Aug 24, 2026. 4PM CT
"We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates." — Jun'ichirō Tanizaki
Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that explores the formal, conceptual, and metaphoric implications of the shadow. Submissions may focus on the shadow as pure visual form expressed through the creation of line, shape, pattern, and texture. They may also examine the cultural and psychological implications of the shadow—exploring ideas of foreboding, internal conflict, passages into the unconscious, or other ephemeral interpretations. All lens-based artwork is welcome.

Juror: Anne Jastrab
Ann Jastrab, Executive Director for The Center for Photographic Art, is a champion of photographic artists. After earning her MFA in photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1995, she joined the resident faculty at the Maine Photographic Workshops and taught there for nearly a decade in both their year-round program and their intensive summer workshops. Prior to taking the position of executive director of CPA, she curated many exhibitions for RayKo during her tenure as gallery director - while also jurying, curating, and organizing numerous exhibitions for other national and international venues outside of the San Francisco Bay Area. She has served on numerous boards and fundraising committees and has been thrilled to bring her talents, passion, and leadership skills to The Center for Photographic Arts. Besides being a curator and an educator, Ann is a writer and editor and she is also a fine art photographer who still carries around a wooden view camera…and a metal one too.

WATER ~ SKY
Submission Deadline: June 21, 11:59PM CT
Exhibition dates: July 18 - Aug 8, 2026
Notification: July 26, 2026. 4PM CT
Water and sky have long formed the visual and symbolic foundation of landscape photography. They remain spaces of atmosphere, reflection, movement, and transition. Water reflects the sky while recording weather, light, and motion; clouds dissolve, gather, and obscure the horizon.
From sea to river, ocean to puddle, these elemental forms shift through color, texture, scale, and changing conditions. Water & Sky invites photographic work that explores the relationship between surface and depth, presence and distance, observation and sensation through the evolving language of landscape photography.

MOTION > BLUR
Submission Deadline: July 19, 11:59PM CT
Notification: July 24, 2026. 4PM CT
Exhibition dates: Aug 22 - Sept 12, 2026
Motion Blur in photography creates a paradox: the image is a frozen moment in time, yet what it captures is movement—streaking, bending, or distortion of light and form in the frame. Blur can convey velocity, gesture, or emotional tone. It can introduce dream-like or surreal qualities by invoking the transitory nature of time passing.
Meteors streak across the sky. Figures pass through a space and dissolve. An artist draws with light. These moments reveal motion not as interruption, but as presence—an imprint of time unfolding within the still image. Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores the visual and conceptual potential of motion and blur.
