ANIMAL LIFE

Opening Night Reception: May 23, 6–8 PM, 2026
Exhibition Dates: May 23 - June 13, 2026

From companion animals and farm creatures to insects, birds, sea life, and wildlife in their natural habitats, Animal Life brings together photographic work that honors the complexity, beauty, and individuality of animals across species and environments.

Artists approached their subjects with curiosity, empathy, and imagination. Through quiet observation, environmental portraiture, documentary approaches, and experimental interpretations, the exhibition presents diverse perspectives on how humans encounter and represent the living world.

Across species and settings, these photographs invite viewers to look more closely and consider the shared environments and relationships that shape life on this planet. All lens-based work is included. Curated by Praxis Directors.

THE PORTRAIT

Opening Night Reception: May 23, 6–8 PM, 2026
Exhibition Dates: May 23 - June 13, 2026

A portrait begins with attention—an act of looking, and of being looked at. Each image holds a tension between appearance and interior life. A face, posture, gesture, or setting may suggest clarity, but also carries ambiguity. Some portraits are direct and documentary; others are constructed, performative, or conceptual. They may reveal intimacy or explore distance, anonymity, and self-invention.

To make a portrait is to engage another presence—or to turn the camera toward oneself—and consider how identity is shaped, expressed, withheld, or transformed within the frame.

Praxis Gallery presents photographic portraits that examine the depth and complexity of the human subject. The exhibition features work reflecting lived experience, psychological presence, cultural context, and formal exploration through the lens. Juried by Elizabeth Flinsch.

THE PORTRAIT

Opening Night Reception: May 23, 6–8 PM, 2026
Exhibition Dates: May 23 - June 13, 2026

A portrait begins with attention. It is an act of looking — and of being looked at. Every portrait holds a tension between appearance and interior life. A face, a posture, a gesture, a setting — each carries information, but also ambiguity. Some portraits are direct and documentary. Others are constructed, performative, or conceptual. Some reveal intimacy; others explore distance, anonymity, or self-invention.

To make a portrait is to engage another presence — or to turn the camera toward oneself — and to consider how identity is shaped, expressed, withheld, or transformed through the photographic frame.

Praxis Gallery seeks photographic portraits that explore the depth and complexity of the human subject. We invite work that reflects lived experience, psychological presence, cultural context, or formal exploration through the lens. All lens-based photographic and lens-based art practices are welcome. Juried by Elizabeth Flinsch

THE LIFE OF COLOR

Color is not passive. It directs attention, shapes atmosphere, and influences how an image is experienced before form is fully resolved. Beyond description, color operates as signal—amplifying, unifying, or destabilizing what is seen. It can heighten emotion or introduce tension, flatten space or deepen it. Its presence is immediate, but its effects are complex.

Praxis Gallery seeks photographic work that engages color as a central force in image-making—where hue, value, and saturation are used deliberately to construct meaning, evoke response, and define the visual experience. Curated by Praxis Directors

BLACK & WHITE

Submission Deadline:  May 3, 11:59 PM
Exhibition Dates:  June 20 – July 11, 2026

More than half a century after the widespread adoption of color photography, black and white continues to assert a distinct and vital visual language—one grounded in reduction, contrast, and form. Without color, the image is stripped to its essential elements. Light defines structure. Tone carries weight. Surface, texture, and gesture become primary. What remains is not absence, but focus—an image constructed through precision, clarity, and visual intent.

Juror | Sandrine Hermand-Grisel

Sandrine Hermand-Grisel is a fine art photographer and printmaker. She grew up in Paris and London before she moved to the United States with her family in 2006. Her work has been published in books and magazines as well as exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide.

Using her broad knowledge of the photographic world, she launched the website All About Photo — a source of information for photographers and aficionados of photography, as well as a showcase platform for talented artists. An integral part of All About Photo is its annual awards competition, The Mind’s Eye, which she has juried over the years with dozens of renowned photographers and curators. BALANCE / REPETITION / DISRUPTION

Opening Night Reception:April 18, 6–8 PM, 2026
Exhibition Dates: April 18 - May 9, 2026

Balance, repetition, and disruption shape how images take form through compositional decision-making and visual relationships. These elements operate not as steps, but as interacting conditions. An image may begin in equilibrium or fracture it immediately; repetition may stabilize form or reveal instability; disruption may interrupt order or expose patterns already at work.

The photographs in this exhibition engage these ideas independently and in combination. Some works emphasize clarity and restraint, while others explore accumulation, variation, or rupture. The subject matter varies widely; what connects the works is how form, space, rhythm, and visual weight function within the frame.

This exhibition approaches composition as an active, exploratory process. The artists presented here test how images hold together, repeat themselves, or come undone.

 International Juried Photography Exhibition

COMPOSED

BALANCE / REPETITION / DISRUPTION
Opening Night Reception:April 18, 6–8 PM, 2026
Exhibition Dates: April 18 - May 9, 2026

Balance, repetition, and disruption shape how images take form through compositional decisions and visual relationships. These elements function not as steps, but as interacting conditions. An image may begin in equilibrium or fracture it immediately; repetition may stabilize form or reveal instability; disruption may interrupt order or expose patterns already present.

The photographs in this exhibition engage these ideas in different ways. Some emphasize clarity and restraint, while others explore accumulation, variation, or rupture. Subject matter varies widely, but each work considers how form, space, rhythm, and visual weight operate within the frame. Together, the works approach composition as an exploratory process, testing how images hold together, repeat themselves, or come undone.

THE PORTRAIT

Opening Night Reception: June 21, 6-8PM

Exhibition Dates: June 21–July 12, 2025

"Making portraits is more than a physical form, it’s a silent communication in understanding and respect between the photographer and the subject. There’s an internal emotion and fire of the soul that you try to capture." – Sandra

In her book, Portraits and Persons, writer Cynthia Freeland describes three essential elements that constitute a portrait: “(1) a recognizable physical body (2) an inner life, i.e., some sort of psychological or mental states and (3) self-presentation, or the "posing.”

Praxis Gallery presents photographs that celebrate the aesthetic and conceptual considerations involved in the creation of the portrait: revealing personal narratives or new anthologies through the artistic representation of the subject. Juried by Sandrine Hermand Grisel

THE PORTRAIT

Submission Deadline:  April 5, 11:59PM CT
Exhibition dates:  May 23 – June 13, 2026
Notification: April 16, 2026. 4PM CT

“A photographic portrait is a picture of someone who knows he is being photographed.” — Richard Avedon

Juror | Elizabeth Flinsch
Elizabeth Flinsch is a photography educator, curator, and the editor of SHOTS Magazine. Based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, SHOTS is an independent print journal of black and white photography founded in 1986. Elizabeth curates submissions, interviews featured artists, and designs the magazine from cover to cover. Elizabeth’s own artistic roots in traditional printmaking show up in her affinity for alternative photographic processes. She is deeply committed to her vision for the photography landscape as a more equitable realm for woman identified, queer, and BIPOC artists.
