NARRATIVES ~
FIGMENTS & FRAGMENTS
Opening Night Reception: Saturday Jan 15th 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: Jan 15th - 29th, 2022
Guest Curator | Emma Powell
The photograph’s power as a narrative tool is derived from the impression that what is captured within the frame is an accurate representation of what actually occurred at a specific moment in time. As complete or comprehensive as any narrative may appear to be, it will always be subject to a process of including some elements and excluding others. These inclusions and exclusion are a crucial part of what photographic storytelling is all about - What is being presented within the frame to the viewer – and what is being left out or left to the viewer’s imagination.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the development of visual narratives through the still image. Stories may take any shape or form; they may be literal or fantasy, documentary or fiction; complex or minimal.

The Found Object
Exhibition Dates: Dec 20th, 2019 - Jan 19th, 2020
Juror | Aline Smithson
A "found object" is a material artifact discovered by chance and assigned esthetic value in an artist’s hand. Found art may include a wide array of objects and items either discarded, forgotten, dropped, or misplaced – such as shoes, a fork, shopping carts, signs, doll heads, abandoned cars, clocks, mementos, or any object that can be reimagined through the lens of a camera… so long as the artist believes that the discovered object possesses a certain aesthetic or talismanic quality - stemming from its appearance, social or personal history.
Praxis presents photographic art that studies of the “found object” as pure visual form, detached from its history or utility. Conversely, the representation of the object may be a catalyst for exploring broader issues such as subjectivity and socialization, memory and loss, or love and death.

AFTER DARK
Opening Night: November 22nd, 2019. 6-8PM
Exhibition Dates: Nov 22nd - Dec 18th, 2019
Juror | Layne Kennedy
“Night does not show things, it suggests them. It disturbs and surprises us with its strangeness. It liberates forces within us which are dominated by our reason during the daytime.” ― Brassai
Spanning two centuries, night photography has captured the collective imagination of the masses. From the infamously long exposures required by early artists, to high speed color films and the advent of digital technology, the subject of the night has inspired an explosion of interest among contemporary artists. Natural vistas, celestial bodies, urban landscapes, factories, artificial structures and nocturnal interludes represent but a few of the limitless subjects of nighttime photography.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the fundamental qualities that make night photography - from dusk to dawn - a compelling contemporary art form.

The Shape of Things
Juror | Ross Anderson
The rhythm of surfaces, lines, and values is for me the essence of photography; composition should be a constant of preoccupation... an organic coordination of visual elements. – Henri Cartier-Bresson
The term composition means ‘putting together’ or the act of combining parts or elements to form a whole - often adhering to compositional principles that make a work of photographic art more appealing or intriguing to viewers. These principles include the development of rhythm, movement, contrast, balance, unity, proximity and continuity to create expressive and compelling compositions – while emphasizing different visual concepts.
Praxis Gallery presents works of art that explore composition as a fundamental aspect of the photographic aesthetic – be it pure visual formalism or in support of thematic objectives.

The Sublime Landscape

Exhibition Dates: Sept 27th - Oct 21st, 2019
Juror | Laura Valenti
The sublime landscape is defined as having the quality of such greatness, magnitude or intensity, whether physical, metaphysical, moral, aesthetic or spiritual, that our ability to perceive or comprehend it is temporarily overwhelmed. According to aesthetic philosophy, the sublime landscapes can include any of five visual components: 1) great ideas, 2) passion, 3) the appropriate use of figures, 4) the right aesthetic diction, and 5) a skillful composition. Praxis Gallery presents photographic artwork that explores a broad, interpretive, and personal investigation of the sublime landscape.

The Abstract Image
Juror | Elizabeth Flinsch
‘An abstract photograph draws away from that which is realistic or literal. It draws away from natural appearances and recognizable subjects in the actual world. Some people even say it departs from true meaning, existence, and reality itself. It stands apart from the concrete whole with its purpose instead depending on conceptual meaning and intrinsic form.' John Suler
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the world through an abstracted lens; utilizing elements of color, light, shadow, texture, shape and line to express meaning outside of traditional representational and documentary styles of photography.

MONO - KROMATIK
Opening Night, July 26th, 6-8PM
Exhibit Dates: July 26th - Aug 19th, 2019
Juror | Sandrine Hermand-Grisel
Half a century after the advent of color film, black and white & monochromatic photography continues to capture our collective imagination. Utilizing tone, contrast, texture and shape, monochromatic photography strips its subject to only the most essential visual elements; revealing a sense of soul, substance and meaning – separate from the shifting sentiments, symbolism and cultural associations of color imagery.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that demonstrate the fundamental qualities that make black and white & monochromatic photography an enduring, contemporary art form.

THE DECISIVE MOMENT
Opening Night: 6-8PM, Mar 8th, 2019
Exhibit Dates: Mar 8th - April 8th, 2019
Juror | David L. Parker
Twentieth-century French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson described the decisive moment as ‘the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression.”
While the concept of the decisive moment is often associated with dynamic, synchronic activity captured in an instant - it may just as well apply to the photographic image that records a thoughtful moment of fleeting solitude or calm.
