NARRATIVES ~
FIGMENTS & FRAGMENTS
Opening Night Reception: Saturday Jan 15th 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: Jan 15th - 29th, 2022
Guest Curator | Emma Powell
The photograph’s power as a narrative tool is derived from the impression that what is captured within the frame is an accurate representation of what actually occurred at a specific moment in time. As complete or comprehensive as any narrative may appear to be, it will always be subject to a process of including some elements and excluding others. These inclusions and exclusion are a crucial part of what photographic storytelling is all about - What is being presented within the frame to the viewer – and what is being left out or left to the viewer’s imagination.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the development of visual narratives through the still image. Stories may take any shape or form; they may be literal or fantasy, documentary or fiction; complex or minimal.

PHOTO ARTS CENTER

CYANOTYPES | ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES | ONE DAY WORKSHOP
Create stunning blueprints with this historic photographic process!
Explore cyanotype as a repeatable photographic printing process. This one-day workshop introduces cyanotype through a lens-based analog workflow centered on calibrated 8×10 digital negatives and hand-coated fine art paper. Participants will learn how to produce consistent cyanotype prints using the Praxis Photo Arts Center Alternative Process Lab and our Piezography-based digital negative system.
After this workshop, you will have the knowledge and hands-on experience to create your own cyanotypes using the Praxis alternative process facility or in your own studio.
During the session, participants will coat paper, work with cyanotype chemistry, and print from a calibrated digital negative while learning how exposure, coating, and negative density affect the final image. The workshop emphasizes repeatable process and technical control, allowing participants to produce multiple prints while refining their technique.
This class centers on four core variables: paper, chemistry, negative density, and UV light. Understanding how these elements interact forms the foundation of cyanotype printing.
Participants will:
• Mix and handle cyanotype chemistry safely
• Properly coat fine art paper for consistent results
• Understand drying, exposure, and washing protocols
• Print finished cyanotype prints from a calibrated 8×10 digital negative made from their own image
• Evaluate how coating, exposure, and negative density affect the final print
• Develop a repeatable workflow suitable for ongoing lab use
The emphasis is on control, clarity, and process literacy.
Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
• Coat fine art paper for cyanotype printing with consistent coverage
• Print from a calibrated digital negative using UV exposure
• Control exposure and washing to produce repeatable cyanotype prints
• Evaluate how coating, exposure, and negative density affect their results and make adjustments
• Continue cyanotype printing independently in their own studio or in the Praxis Alternative Process Lab
Participants will also receive resources for producing digital negatives on their own printers, along with information on ordering calibrated digital negatives through Praxis for independent projects.
Printing Format
All work will be printed on fine art paper.
Each participant may submit one digital image in advance, from which Praxis will produce a calibrated 8×10 digital negative.
Students will coat multiple sheets and produce finished cyanotype prints during the session. The workshop emphasizes process repetition and refinement, allowing participants to work with the same negative while learning how coating, exposure, and development affect the final print.
Additional Digital Negatives
Participants may purchase additional calibrated 8×10 digital negatives:
$35 per negative
All additional files must be submitted in advance.
No on-site file adjustments or same-day negative production.
Included Membership
All workshop participants receive:
One complimentary month of membership to the Praxis Darkroom & Alternative Process Lab. This provides continued access to the facilities where participants can independently produce cyanotypes and further develop their process using the skills learned in the workshop.
Who This Is For
No prior experience required.
This workshop is ideal for photographers and artists who want to:
• Expand their lens-based practice into alternative photographic processes
• Learn a calibrated digital-negative workflow
• Begin working independently within a professional analog lab environment
Instructors
Ross Anderson and Christopher Crowhurst
