The photograph’s power as a narrative tool is derived from the impression that what is captured within the frame is an accurate representation of what actually occurred at a specific moment in time. As complete or comprehensive as any narrative may appear to be, it will always be subject to a process of including some elements and excluding others. These inclusions and exclusion are a crucial part of what photographic storytelling is all about - What is being presented within the frame to the viewer – and what is being left out or left to the viewer’s imagination.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic works that explore the development of visual narratives through the still image. Stories may take any shape or form; they may be literal or fantasy, documentary or fiction; complex or minimal.

PHOTO ARTS CENTER
MAKING KIRLIAN PHOTOGRAPHS | ONE DAY WORKSHOP
Explore the world of Kirlian photography, an alternative electricity-based method of capturing an object’s energetic aura on film!
This workshop will be taught by local artist Rachel Robison who learned Kirlian photography through collaboration with the late photographer Mark D. Roberts. His body of work, “Secret Life of Plants,” is a prolific series of Kirlian images illuminating the inner architecture of leaves and flowers. Taking inspiration from this well-honed technique, this workshop will dive into the artistic potential of conductivity. Participants will be encouraged to experiment with controlled exposure of film to electricity and to think creatively about alternative photography methods as they create their own electrifying pieces.
Kirlian photography is often said to reveal a hidden “life force” in its subjects, via the corona discharge that is emitted during the process. This has inspired a variety of philosophies since its discovery in the late 1800s. In addition to the process itself, this workshop will cover the history and uses of Kirlian photography so that whether scientific, paranormal, or metaphysical, you will come away with a greater appreciation for the hidden facets of our world.
Join us as we immerse ourselves in this mysterious medium, engage with alternative approaches to film, and get lost in Kirlian photography!
