Juror’s Statement

The Artist Intervenes

The ubiquitous-ness of photographs today requires creative approaches in all genres of photography, that shift the norms and reinvigorate the medium, as evidenced by the wonderful submissions to this exhibition. This is not an easy task as many images selected reflect deeply personal examinations, telling stories with a single image and are layered in unique and usual ways. As we tip toe into these new ways of working, we are shifting our practice to making, rather than taking photographs. We are mining our family scrapbooks to tell stories in new ways, we are altering the images with paint, scissors, and thread, and we are using process to communicate our narratives. It is, indeed, an exciting time in photography, where all approaches to creating photographic art are of interest.

As a juror, I look for unique and elevated images that delight, excite, and make me want to see more; the work needs to reveal a quality of expression that is poetic, magical, meaningful, and creative. Most importantly, work that is fully resolved and shows prowess.

With all jurying, there are many wall-worthy submissions that come steps away from the finish line, only to be rejected due to constraints of space. It was an exciting and daunting process to consider hundreds of photographs, so thank you for submitting so much excellent work and making my decisions so difficult! It was inspiring to see the range of methodologies and the array of imaginative imagery. Please know that this was not a cursory examination, but a long hard look at your work.

I am so grateful to have spent hours and hours with your photographs, no decision came lightly, and I do want to say congratulations to all who submitted. You have provided me so much excitement about the future of photography. Thank you again for this wonderful privilege.
