From companion animals and farm creatures to insects, birds, sea life, and wildlife in their natural habitats, Animal Life brings together photographic work that honors the complexity, beauty, and individuality of animals across species and environments.

Artists approached their subjects with curiosity, empathy, and imagination. Through quiet observation, environmental portraiture, documentary approaches, and experimental interpretations, the exhibition presents diverse perspectives on how humans encounter and represent the living world.

​

Across species and settings, these photographs invite viewers to look more closely and consider the shared environments and relationships that shape life on this planet. All lens-based work is included. Curated by Praxis Directors.

A portrait begins with attention—an act of looking, and of being looked at. Each image holds a tension between appearance and interior life. A face, posture, gesture, or setting may suggest clarity, but also carries ambiguity. Some portraits are direct and documentary; others are constructed, performative, or conceptual. They may reveal intimacy or explore distance, anonymity, and self-invention.

 

To make a portrait is to engage another presence—or to turn the camera toward oneself—and consider how identity is shaped, expressed, withheld, or transformed within the frame.

​

Praxis Gallery presents photographic portraits that examine the depth and complexity of the human subject. The exhibition features work reflecting lived experience, psychological presence, cultural context, and formal exploration through the lens. Juried by Elizabeth Flinsch.

Praxis Photo Arts Center offers one of Minneapolis’s most complete analog darkroom facilities, open 24/7 for members. Our wet and dry darkrooms support black-and-white film development, traditional silver-gelatin printing, and 35mm through 8×10 enlarging. The space includes individual work areas, archival workflow equipment, and a professional film-scanning station. Praxis is a welcoming and supportive community where photographers from all backgrounds work, learn, and grow together. In addition to black-and-white printing, access members may use our color development equipment, and the darkroom also serves as a workspace for alternative photographic processes taught and practiced throughout the year.
