BEGINNING COLOR DARKROOM | COLOR FILM PROCESSING & SCANNING | TWO-DAY EVENING WORKSHOP

LAn introductory two-evening workshop in color film processing and scanning—ideal for beginners using the Jobo CPE2 processor.

 

This class fulfills the requirement to reserve the JOBO processor as an Access Member.

 

This workshop is ideal for beginners who want to understand the essentials of color film development and digital conversion. No prior experience with color film or scanning is required.

On the first evening, students will begin at 6:00PM by receiving a roll of color film. They’ll have time to go out and expose the film before returning to the lab. Once back, they’ll be introduced to the Jobo CPE2 system and guided through the C-41 color negative development process. Instructors will also demonstrate how to load and develop 4x5 color sheet film using the Jobo processor.

The second evening will focus on cleaning the negatives, scanning with flatbed or dedicated film scanners, and learning a basic digital workflow to store and share images.

Course Content:

 

Evening 1: Color Film Development

  • Introduction to the C-41 process

  • Chemistry prep, temperature control (38°C), agitation

  • Hands-on film processing with the Jobo CPE2 system

  • Shooting and processing provided roll of color film

  • Demo: Loading and processing 4x5 color film

 

Evening 2: Scanning & Workflow

  • Film cleaning, drying, and handling

  • Introduction to flatbed and film scanners

  • Basic scanning software and file workflow

  • Editing and storing digital files

 

CLASS REQUIREMENTS: No experience necessary.

***Students may arrive at 6:00 PM to expose their roll of film before the official class start time at 6:30 PM

 

COST: This two-evening workshop has a registration fee of $125. All chemistry and scanning equipment are provided. Registration includes:

  • C-41 chemistry for one roll

  • Use of Jobo CPE2 processor

  • Scanning station access

  • Digital copy of your scans via file transfer

 

CLASS SIZE: Limited to 4 participants for focused instruction.

Kevin Ealaín has been making photographs for nearly twenty years. He built his first darkroom in a rented duplex in 2012 after taking a community ed class in St. Paul, and he’s been devoted to film and silver-based printing ever since. The only thing he enjoys more than watching an image appear under the red safelight is sharing his knowledge and passion for the craft with others.
