Silver Print Studio Session: From Work Print to Final Print. Develop a deeper understanding of black-and-white silver gelatin printing in this focused, hands-on studio session. Each participant receives an identical black-and-white negative made from the same tripod-mounted exposure sequence. Beginning with the same image allows the group to establish a work print efficiently, study the same tonal challenges, and concentrate on the foundational decisions that transform a work print into a finished print. Participants will work independently at their own enlargers while moving together through exposure, contrast control, dodging, burning, and final print evaluation. The small class size allows ample time for questions and in-depth discussion at each stage of the printing process. The session concludes with a group discussion comparing the finished prints and the decisions behind them. – What You’ll Learn • Make and evaluate a test strip • Establish a baseline work print • Refine overall print exposure • Control contrast using multigrade filtration • Evaluate highlight, midtone, and shadow relationships • Identify areas requiring local exposure control • Plan and execute dodging and burning • Create a final print process record • Evaluate and produce a finished silver gelatin print • Compare different interpretations made from an identical negative – What’s Included • An identical black-and-white negative for each participant • Black-and-white printing chemistry • Up to 10 sheets of Ilford RC printing paper • Individual enlarger and printing station • Aprons and non-latex gloves • Mid-afternoon snacks – Requirements Participants should have previous experience making a basic black-and-white darkroom print. Completion of the Praxis Beginning Darkroom Workshop or comparable experience is recommended. This session does not include film exposure, film development, or contact-sheet printing.
