Discover one of photography's most beautiful and enduring printing processes. In this intensive one-day workshop, participants produce hand-coated platinum/palladium prints from their own digital image using calibrated digital negatives and traditional contact printing methods. Participants will coat fine art paper with platinum/palladium chemistry, expose their prints under UV light, and complete the full development and clearing process to create archival-quality prints with exceptional tonal range. – What You'll Learn • Prepare and use calibrated digital negatives (demonstration) • Hand-coat paper with platinum/palladium chemistry • Control coating and drying techniques • Make UV contact exposures • Develop, clear, wash, and archive platinum/palladium prints • Evaluate tonal range, contrast, and paper surface – What's Included • All platinum/palladium chemistry • Hahnemühle Platinum Rag paper • One calibrated digital negative prepared by Praxis from your submitted file • All trays, equipment, UV exposure systems, and processing materials • Light lunch (participants with dietary restrictions should bring their own) – Requirements No previous platinum/palladium experience is required. Beginning Darkroom: Shoot • Develop • Print Your First Roll of Black & White Film. Discover the magic of the traditional photographic darkroom in this hands-on, two-day introduction to black & white film photography. Designed for beginners, this workshop will guide you through the complete process—from exposing a roll of film to making your first silver gelatin print. On the first day, participants photograph the neighborhood using a manual 35mm camera provided by Praxis (or bring their own camera), then develop their black & white negatives in the darkroom. Experience one of photography's earliest and most captivating processes. In this immersive two-day workshop, participants learn the historic wet plate collodion process while creating their own tintypes from start to finish. Since 2019, she has exhibited widely throughout the Midwest, with work held in state museum archives and featured in exhibitions, publications, television, and public radio. Discover one of photography's oldest and most accessible alternative processes. In this intensive one-day workshop, participants create hand-coated cyanotype prints from their own digital image using calibrated digital negatives and traditional UV contact printing methods. Working in the Praxis Alternative Process Lab, participants will learn a repeatable, lens-based cyanotype workflow while producing multiple finished prints and gaining the skills to continue printing independently. – What You'll Learn • Safely mix and handle cyanotype chemistry • Hand-coat fine art paper for consistent results • Understand drying, exposure, and washing techniques • Print from calibrated digital negatives using UV light • Evaluate how coating, exposure, and negative density affect the final print • Develop a repeatable cyanotype printing workflow – What's Included • All cyanotype chemistry • Fine art paper • One calibrated 8×10 digital negative prepared by Praxis from your submitted image • Full use of the Praxis Alternative Process Lab and equipment • Light lunch (participants with dietary restrictions should bring their own) – Requirements No previous alternative process or darkroom experience is necessary. Participants will submit one digital image before the workshop. Up to 38 photographs will be selected for exhibition at Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis. Photographers will be notified approximately 12 days after the submission deadline. The acceptance notification email will include instructions for shipping artwork or submitting high-resolution digital files for printing. Accepted photographs will be on display at Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis and featured on the Praxis Gallery online exhibition page. Submission Guidelines Eligibility • All entrants must be 18 years of age or older. • Submitted images must not have been exhibited at Praxis Gallery within the past year. Awards • Directors' Choice – Free entry into two future juried calls for entry of the artist's choice. • Five Honorable Mentions – Featured in the exhibition, printed exhibition catalog, and online exhibition gallery. Submission Fees • $35 for up to five images. • $5 for each additional image (up to ten images total). • Payment is accepted by credit or debit card through our secure online submission system. • Entry fees are non-refundable. • Praxis Members receive 10 images for the price of 5. Exhibition Frame & Print Sizes Praxis features museum-quality 22 × 22-inch black frames with four standard pre-cut white mats. Maximum image sizes: • 11" × 11" • 10" × 15" • 11.8" × 15" • 8" × 15" • Images must fit within these dimensions. If an image exceeds the maximum size, portions of the image may be covered by the mat opening. • Praxis never crops submitted digital files. High-resolution images are scaled for the best possible presentation. • Selected photographers will receive detailed instructions for shipping original prints or uploading digital files for printing. Speaking of the power of photography, Garry Winogrand once said, “Putting four edges around a collection of information or facts transforms it.” Take that idea one step further: what happens when you place a frame—a doorway, window, mirror, picture frame, architectural element, or other structure—within the photograph itself?

Praxis Gallery seeks photographic art that uses one or more frames within the image as the conceptual foundation for visual expression. Whether emphasizing a subject, creating layers of meaning, revealing relationships between spaces, or exploring perspective, boundary, reflection, and isolation, we welcome all genres and interpretations.

Up to 74 photographs will be selected for exhibition at Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis. Photographers will be notified approximately 12 days after the submission deadline. The acceptance notification email will include instructions for shipping artwork or submitting high-resolution digital files for printing. Accepted photographs will be on display at Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis and featured on the Praxis Gallery online exhibition page. Submission Guidelines Eligibility • All entrants must be 18 years of age or older. • Submitted images must not have been exhibited at Praxis Gallery within the past year. Awards • Juror's Choice – Free entry into three future juried calls for entry of the artist's choice. • Directors' Choice – Free entry into two future juried calls for entry of the artist's choice. • Eight Honorable Mentions – Featured in the exhibition, printed exhibition catalog, and online exhibition gallery. Submission Fees • $35 for up to five images. • $5 for each additional image (up to ten images total). • Payment is accepted by credit or debit card through our secure online submission system. • Entry fees are non-refundable. • Praxis Members receive 10 images for the price of 5. Exhibition Frame & Print Sizes Praxis features museum-quality 22 × 22-inch black frames with four standard pre-cut white mats. Maximum image sizes: • 11" × 11" • 10" × 15" • 11.8" × 15" • 8" × 15" • Images must fit within these dimensions. If an image exceeds the maximum size, portions of the image may be covered by the mat opening. • Praxis never crops submitted digital files. Option 1 – Submit Original Prints • Original prints only. • No framed artwork. • Praxis provides all matting and framing. • Prints must be shipped with return packaging and prepaid return postage. • Label all packages with: Artist Name Exhibition Title Option 2 – Praxis Printing Service ($37) • Includes printing, matting, framing, and installation. • Upload a high-resolution digital file through our secure Dropbox. • Printed on a Canon Pro-4000 using Epson Premium Luster Fine Art Photo Paper. • Praxis provides frames for all exhibitions. Exhibition Frame & Print Sizes Praxis features museum-quality 22 × 22-inch black frames with four standard pre-cut white mats. Maximum image sizes: • 11" × 11" • 10" × 15" • 11.8" × 15" • 8" × 15" • Images must fit within these dimensions. If an image exceeds the maximum size, portions of the image may be covered by the mat opening. • Praxis never crops submitted digital files. A portrait begins with attention—an act of looking, and of being looked at. Each image holds a tension between appearance and interior life. A face, posture, gesture, or setting may suggest clarity, but also carries ambiguity. Some portraits are direct and documentary; others are constructed, performative, or conceptual. They may reveal intimacy or explore distance, anonymity, and self-invention.

 

To make a portrait is to engage another presence—or to turn the camera toward oneself—and consider how identity is shaped, expressed, withheld, or transformed within the frame.

​

Praxis Gallery presents photographic portraits that examine the depth and complexity of the human subject. The exhibition features work reflecting lived experience, psychological presence, cultural context, and formal exploration through the lens. Juried by Elizabeth Flinsch.

ФОРМА РЕЧЕЙ

Стара приказка: «Зображення варте тисячі слів», здається, свідчить про те, що фотографія виходить за рамки мови, але слова були ключовою частиною роботи багатьох важливих фотографів — від рекламних щитів і вивісок на багатьох фотографіях Уокера Еванса до Лі Наприклад, книга Фрідлендера «Знаки» 2019 року.   Взаємодія мови та зображення може створити яскраве відчуття напруги, іронії чи гостроти. Розмір і форми шрифту — це візуальні аспекти, які можуть мати таку ж вагу, як і будь-який інший аспект у кадрі.

A portrait begins with attention. It is an act of looking — and of being looked at. Every portrait holds a tension between appearance and interior life. A face, a posture, a gesture, a setting — each carries information, but also ambiguity. Some portraits are direct and documentary. Others are constructed, performative, or conceptual. Some reveal intimacy; others explore distance, anonymity, or self-invention.

To make a portrait is to engage another presence — or to turn the camera toward oneself — and to consider how identity is shaped, expressed, withheld, or transformed through the photographic frame.

Praxis Gallery seeks photographic portraits that explore the depth and complexity of the human subject. We invite work that reflects lived experience, psychological presence, cultural context, or formal exploration through the lens. All lens-based photographic and lens-based art practices are welcome. Juried by Elizabeth Flinsch

Охоплюючи два століття, магія нічної фотографії захопила колективну уяву мас. Від ганебно відомих довгих витримок, яких вимагали ранні художники, до високошвидкісного кольорового фільму та появи цифрових технологій, світло вночі надихнуло вибух інтересу серед сучасних художників. Природні краєвиди, небесні тіла, міські ландшафти, штучні споруди та нічні перерви представляють лише деякі з безмежних об’єктів нічної фотографії.

 

Галерея Praxis прагне представити фотороботи, які досліджують основні якості, які роблять нічну фотографію – від сутінків до світанку – переконливою формою сучасного мистецтва. ІНСТРУКЦІЇ ПОДАЧІ

Acceptance

Up to 38 images will be selected by the juror for exhibition at Praxis Gallery. Photographers will be notified of their selection 12 days after the deadline. The acceptance notification email will include instructions for shipping artwork or submitting high-resolution digital files for printing. Accepted photographs will also be posted on the Praxis website exhibition page at that time.

  • All entrants must be 18 years or older.

  • Submitted images must not have been exhibited at Praxis Gallery within the past year.

 

Awards

The following awards will be presented:​

  • Directors’ Choice – Free entry into two future juried calls for entry of their choice.

  • Five Honorable Mentions – Recognized and featured in the exhibition, the printed show catalog, and the online exhibit gallery.

 

Submission Fees

  • $35 for up to five images.

  • $5 for each additional image (up to ten images total per open call).

  • Payment is accepted by credit/debit card through our secure online submission site.

  • Entry fees are non-refundable.

Image Submission Formatting

All submissions must be digital files submitted through our online submission form.

  • File Format – JPEG (.jpg)

  • File Size – 8MB or smaller

  • File Naming – Use the format: ImageTitle_by_FirstName_LastName

    • Example: MyPhoto_by_Amy_Johnson.jpg

Exhibit Artwork Submission & Printing for Selected Artists

Selected artists have two options for submitting exhibition prints:

Option 1: Submit Original Prints

  • Praxis accepts original prints that fit one of our four precut matte sizes.

  • No framed artwork will be accepted.

  • Praxis will mat and frame the prints for exhibition.

  • Prints must be shipped with return postage and packaging and labeled with:

    • Artist's name

    • Exhibition title

 

Option 2: Praxis Printing Service

For convenience, Praxis can print exhibition images for a $37 fee (includes printing, matting, framing, and installation).

  • High-resolution files must be uploaded to our secure Dropbox.

  • Praxis print technicians have 50+ years of fine art printing experience.

  • Images will be printed on a Canon Pro-4600 using Epson Premium Luster Fine Art Photo Paper.

  • Praxis provides frames for all exhibitions.

 

Exhibition Frame & Print Size

Praxis features museum-quality 22x22-inch black frames with four standard precut white mattes.

The following dimensions represent the maximum image area for prints. These sizes fit precisely within our precut mattes, with a 0.5-inch border around the edges to prevent cropping by the matte:

  • 11” x 11”

  • 10” x 15”

  • 11.8” x 15”

  • 8” x 15”

 

  • Images must fit within these dimensions. If an image exceeds the maximum size, portions of the image will be cropped by the matte.

  • We never crop submitted digital files. Instead, we scale the final high-resolution images for the best presentation.

  • Selected photographers will receive detailed instructions on shipping their print or submitting a high-resolution digital file for Praxis to print.

 

Sales & Archive

  • Artists may offer their exhibition prints for sale. Praxis Gallery will notify artists of any purchase inquiries.

  • Praxis takes a 50% commission on all sales.

  • Selected works will be archived in the Praxis Gallery & Photographic Art Center’s online gallery.

 

Copyright & Usage Rights

  • Artists retain all copyrights to their images.

  • By submitting, artists grant Praxis Gallery a non-exclusive right to use their images for:

    • Exhibition display

    • Promotion of the artist and related programs

    • Online exhibition archives

    • Social media and website features

  • The artist's name will always be credited wherever their work is displayed.

"Making portraits is more than a physical form, it’s a silent communication in understanding and respect between the photographer and the subject. There’s an internal emotion and fire of the soul that you try to capture." – Sandra


In her book, Portraits and Persons, writer Cynthia Freeland describes three essential elements that constitute a portrait: “(1) a recognizable physical body (2) an inner life, i.e., some sort of psychological or mental states and (3) self-presentation, or the "posing.”
 

Praxis Gallery presents photographs that celebrate the aesthetic and conceptual considerations involved in the creation of the portrait: revealing personal narratives or new anthologies through the artistic representation of the subject. Juried by Sandrine Hermand Grisel

Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that explores the formal, conceptual, and metaphoric implications of the shadow. Submissions may focus on the shadow as pure visual form expressed through the creation of line, shape, pattern, and texture. They may also examine the cultural and psychological implications of the shadow—exploring ideas of foreboding, internal conflict, passages into the unconscious, or other ephemeral interpretations. All lens-based artwork is welcome.

Acceptance

Up to 74 images will be selected by the juror for exhibition at Praxis Gallery. Photographers will be notified of their selection 12 days after the deadline. The acceptance notification email will include instructions for shipping artwork or submitting high-resolution digital files for printing. Accepted photographs will also be posted on the Praxis website exhibition page at that time.

  • All entrants must be 18 years or older.

  • Submitted images must not have been exhibited at Praxis Gallery within the past year.

 

Awards

The following awards will be presented:

  • Juror’s Choice – Free entry into three future juried calls for entry of their choice.

  • Directors’ Choice – Free entry into two future juried calls for entry of their choice.

  • Eight Honorable Mentions – Recognized and featured in the exhibition, the printed show catalog, and the online exhibit gallery.

 

Submission Fees

  • $35 for up to five images.

  • $5 for each additional image (up to ten images total per open call).

  • Payment is accepted by credit/debit card through our secure online submission site.

  • Entry fees are non-refundable.

All submissions must be digital files submitted through our online submission form.

  • File Format – JPEG (.jpg)

  • Image Size – 72 ppi, with the longest side no more than 1920 pixels

  • File Size – 8MB or smaller

  • File Naming – Use the format: ImageTitle_by_FirstName_LastName

    • Example: MyPhoto_by_Amy_Johnson.jpg

  • Praxis accepts original prints that fit one of our four precut matte sizes.

  • No framed artwork will be accepted.

  • Praxis will mat and frame the prints for exhibition.

  • Prints must be shipped with return postage and packaging and labeled with:

    • Artist's name

    • Exhibition title

 

Option 2: Praxis Printing Service

For convenience, Praxis can print exhibition images for a $37 fee (includes printing, matting, framing, and installation).

  • High-resolution files must be uploaded to our secure Dropbox.

  • Praxis print technicians have 50+ years of fine art printing experience.

  • Images will be printed on a Canon Pro-4000 using Epson Premium Luster Fine Art Photo Paper.

  • Praxis provides frames for all exhibitions.

 

Exhibition Frame & Print Size

Praxis features museum-quality 22x22-inch black frames with four standard precut white mattes.

The following dimensions represent the maximum image area for prints. These sizes fit precisely within our precut mattes, with a 0.5-inch border around the edges to prevent cropping by the matte:

  • 11” x 11”

  • 10” x 15”

  • 11.8” x 15”

  • 8” x 15”

 

  • Images must fit within these dimensions. If an image exceeds the maximum size, portions of the image will be cropped by the matte.

  • We never crop submitted digital files. Instead, we scale the final high-resolution images for the best presentation.

  • Selected photographers will receive detailed instructions on shipping their print or submitting a high-resolution digital file for Praxis to print.

 

Sales & Archive

  • Artists may offer their exhibition prints for sale. Praxis Gallery will notify artists of any purchase inquiries.

  • Praxis takes a 50% commission on all sales.

  • Selected works will be archived in the Praxis Gallery & Photographic Art Center’s online gallery.

 

Copyright & Usage Rights

  • Artists retain all copyrights to their images.

  • By submitting, artists grant Praxis Gallery a non-exclusive right to use their images for:

    • Exhibition display

From companion animals and farm creatures to insects, birds, sea life, and wildlife in their natural habitats, Animal Life invites photographic work that honors the complexity, beauty, and individuality of animals across species and environments.

Artists are encouraged to approach their subjects with curiosity, empathy, and imagination. Whether through quiet observation, environmental portraiture, documentary approaches, or experimental interpretations, the exhibition welcomes diverse perspectives that explore the many ways humans encounter and represent the living world around us.

​

Across species and settings, these photographs invite viewers to look more closely and consider the shared environments and relationships that shape life on this planet. All lens-based work is welcome. Curated by Praxis Directors.

ЦІАНОТІП | АЛЬТЕРНАТИВНІ ПРОЦЕСИ | ОДНОДЕННИЙ ВОРКШЕМ

 

Створюйте унікальні сині зображення!

 

Цей одноденний семінар з альтернативних процесів знайомить із чудесами та можливостями друку ваших негативів або створення силуетних колажів на синіх кольорових ціанотипіях із використанням багатьох типів паперу та тканини.  Ціанотипії можна друкувати на будь-якій двовимірній поверхні та використовувати УФ-світло для створення відбитка. Використовуйте свою уяву, щоб відкрити світ творчих можливостей у цьому традиційному альтернативному фотографічному семінарі.

 

Студенти навчаться наносити покриття та техніку сушіння на різних поверхнях. Ми також обговоримо підготовку різних поверхонь, включаючи папір і тканину. Потім студенти підготують, покриють і висушать свої проекти.   Потім студенти створюватимуть ціанотипні відбитки на готових підкладках. Після друку ми розглянемо варіанти обробки для цього унікального процесу. 

 

ВИМОГИ КЛАСУ: **Необов’язковий** – цифрові або традиційні негативи великого формату, готові до друку, або предмети для контактних відбитків на ціанотипії в колажі, досвід темної кімнати не є обов’язковим для участі.

РОЗМІР КЛАСУ: у цьому класі мінімум 4 учасники та максимум 8 учасників ( ЗАЛИШИЛОСЯ ЛИШЕ 1 МІСЦЕ ).

​

ЩО ВЗЯТИ: Студенти можуть принести свої улюблені чорно-білі або цифрові негативи великого формату, якщо вони у них є (не обов’язково).   Ми надамо учням різноманітні матеріали для їх проекту, включаючи папір і тканину. Також надамо ціанохімію, необхідне обладнання. Ми заохочуємо студентів приносити предмети, які ви, можливо, захочете використати в контактному друку силуетів, наприклад пір’я, квіти, листя, тканину, вирізи, речі, які можна притиснути під склом для контактного друку.  Для У цій майстерні ми рекомендуємо пористі поверхні, такі як папір і тканини, які не потребують спеціальної попередньої обробки. Скло, метал і кераміка не рекомендовані для цього вступного семінару.
