The Shadow Aspect | Directors Choice
The Shadow Aspect | Exhibition Dates: January 19, 2018 to February 17th, 2018. Directors Choice, Wen Hang Lin. ‘Most people think that shadows follow, precede, surround beings or objects. The truth is that they also surround words, ideas, desires, deeds, impulses and memories.’ This quote by Elie Wiesel summarizes the shadow as both a visual and conceptual form. The work of our Directors Choice award winner epitomizes both the formal and conceptual elements of the theme in a compelling and unified group of images.
Wen Hang Lin’s series is a study on visual formality while also evoking the cultural and psychological implications of the shadow - exploring ideas of foreboding, internal conflict, passages into the unconsciousness, or other ephemeral interpretations. Win Hang Lin describes his process as ‘a technique based on coincidence and chance—rewinding film after it is exposed and overlapping the images—standing in for our experience of reality, balanced between the world we perceive and the world(s) we overlook.’
Wen Hang Lin was born and raised in Taiwan. He uses the camera to express his curiosity and to explore the conceptual context of his daily life. For him, photography has become a meditative monologue and a quest of seeing the unseen. His works were in numerous exhibitions throughout the US. Wen currently works in the arts as a graphic designer in Phoenix, Ariz.
