Amusements & The Absurd in the Shadows of Uncertainty
Praxis Online Exhibition
August - October 2020

Spinning humor out of tragedy is by no means a new phenomenon. Humor, irony and the celebration of the absurd are historic ways of processing fear and tragedy. Humor and absurdity provides a healthy outlet for some people to diffuse feelings of doom and uncertainty - helping people struggling with depression and anxiety of conflicts such as our current global pandemic and civic unrest. People who use humor as a coping strategy have instantaneous access to millions of other people, and we find our niches and networks - Bart Andrews

Praxis gallery presents photographic art that documents the distractions, absurdities, irony and amusements that provides moments of levity in dark and uncertain times. All genres, capture types (Smart Phone included), color and black & white, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

For all of America’s history, people of color have been subjected to massive inequality in all forms including violence from the state and the white majority. Mass demonstrations against state violence have also been a fixture of US politics, from the civil rights movement to Ferguson, Missouri, to the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers on May 25, 2020. The scenes from Minneapolis are just the latest chapter in that story.

Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that documents the struggle to bring justice to George Floyd – and document the repercussions of violence by the state, the police, and white racist agents against black and minority communities, creating the state of fear that has fueled recent protests and unrest in Minneapolis and across the nation. All genres, capture types (Smart Phone included), color and black & white, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

“In times of crisis, the arts bear witness. When artists engage with their political and social contexts, their critical role in terms of social conscience, moral critique, and collective action becomes visible. They provide an essential outlet for the range of heightened emotions we feel: confusion, frustration, anxiety and hopelessness. Most importantly, they remind us of life’s joys and of the strength and resilience of the human spirit”.

Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that documents the day to day struggle to maintain our humanity,  to face our fears, and to overcome the chaos and discord that threatens the common cause we all face in our fight to defeat the Covid 19 pandemic.
