EMPTY PLACES : ABANDONED SPACES

Juror | Carl Corey

Through the visual representation of abandoned spaces, artifacts of history are at once fresh and new, ancient and decayed. The past continues to live in these forsaken, ruined, or empty spaces and we ask— Who were the people who lived and worked here? What were their lives like? What were their stories? What happened to them in these spaces?

Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores the visual and social significance of abandoned space - where derelict factories, churches, private houses or other empty places serve as the basis for creative investigation.

The Portrait

Opening Night: 6-8PM, Nov 16th, 2018
Exhibition Dates: Nov 16th - Dec 5th, 2018

Juror | Douglas Beasley

In her book, Portraits and Persons, writer Cynthia Freeland describes three essential elements that constitute a portrait: “(1) a recognizable physical body (2) an inner life, i.e., some sort of psychological or mental states and (3) self-presentation, or the "posing.” Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that celebrates the aesthetic and conceptual considerations involved in the creation of the portrait: revealing personal narratives or new anthologies through the artistic representation of the subject.

Praxis Gallery & Photographic Arts Center Presents

Dallas Crow: The Other Border

Opening Night: 6-9PM, Oct 19th
Exhibition Dates: Oct 19th - Nov 4th, 2018

While the Southern border of the U.S. seems to be in the news every day, “The Other Border,” a sparsely-populated, roughly 2000-mile stretch from International Falls to the Pacific Ocean, including parts of five states, encompasses forests, lakes, rivers, plains, farms, mountains, desert, dwindling small towns, two national parks, and two exclaves. This documentary project looks at a large swath of the U.S. that is often ignored by the national media, popular culture, and most tourists, and has been left almost entirely untouched by the economy of big box stores, malls, and chain restaurants and motels. The photos in this exhibit offer glimpses into parts of an America that few Americans ever see or think about.

The Shape of Things

Opening Night: 6-8PM, Sept 28th
Exhibition Dates: Sept 28th - October 17th, 2018

The rhythm of surfaces, lines, and values is for me the essence of photography; composition should be a constant of preoccupation... an organic coordination of visual elements. – Henri Cartier-Bresson

The term composition means ‘putting together’ or the act of combining parts or elements to form a whole - often adhering to compositional principles that make a work of photographic art more appealing or intriguing to viewers. These principles include the development of rhythm, movement, contrast, balance, unity, proximity and continuity to create expressive and compelling compositions – while emphasizing different visual, social, or political concepts.

Praxis Gallery presents works of art that explore composition as a fundamental aspect of the photographic aesthetic – be it pure visual formalism or in support of thematic objectives.

The Found Object

Opening Night: 6-8PM, Aug 24th
Exhibition Dates: Aug 24th - Sept 18th, 2018

Juror | Laura Migliorino

A "found object" is a material artifact discovered by chance and assigned esthetic value in an artist’s hand.  Found art may include a wide array of objects and items either discarded, forgotten, dropped, or misplaced – such as shoes, a fork, shopping carts, signs, doll heads, abandoned cars, clocks, mementos,  or any object that can be reimagined through the lens of a camera… so long as the artist believes that the discovered object possesses a certain aesthetic or talismanic quality - stemming from its appearance, social or personal history.

Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that investigates this idiom; exploring the subject of the “found object” as pure visual form, detached from its history or utility - or conversely, the representation of the object as a catalyst for exploring broader issues such as subjectivity and socialization, memory and loss, or love and death.

The Telling Image

The photograph’s power as a narrative tool is derived from the impression that what is captured within the frame is an accurate representation of what actually occurred at a specific moment in time. As complete or comprehensive as any narrative may appear to be, it will always be subject to a process of including some elements and excluding others. These inclusions and exclusion are a crucial part of what photographic storytelling is all about - What is being presented within the frame to the viewer – and what is being left out or left to the viewer’s imagination.

Praxis Gallery presents photographic works of art that explore the development of visual narratives through the still image - be it literal or fantasy, documentary or fiction; complex or minimal visual expressions.
